  四、阅读理解(共3篇,10小题;每小题2分,20分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、 B、 C中,选出较佳选项,井在答题长上将该项涂黑。

  A

Prom was born in the United States more than 100 years ago and has spread to other parts of the world. In America, it has become an industry similar to the wedding business.

A study done by the American financial company, Visa, found that, on average, an American family spends more than 900 dollars on prom. Much of it is spent on what the young adults wear to the formal dance. Gowns often cost in the hundreds of dollars.Tuxedo rentals are similarly priced. And then there are costs linked to hair and makeup, flowers for prom dates, dinner and transportation. It adds up. But some students find ways to make the event more economical."I borrowed my dress," says Maggie Kinnett, a senior at Yorktown High School in Arlington. She got her makeup done without cost by a professional who is a family friend. Many girls choose to get ready for the prom with friends. They might get their hair done at a beauty shop together. They might hire a professional make-up artist for a few hours to share the costs.

Apart from the costs, it might matter much to students to have a prom date. "There's a lot of pressure to have a date to prom, just because people don't want to be by themselves and be seen by themselves. It's really to me, not a big deal, but it's definitely a big deal at my school."

Asking someone to prom, however, is no small task in the United States."Promposals," as they are called, are supposed to be imaginative and take time to plan. Sometimes a kid will make a big poster using rhymes or word play to invite someone to prom. Some kids might buy a gift to present when they ask someone to prom. While most promposals are simple and sweet, and sometimes getting the "yes" response is the best part of prom, some promposals can be far more elaborate and sometimes not a good idea. In a California park, for example, a student sprayed 'Prom?" in huge letters on a boulder last year. In May, many people were offended when a white high school student in California painted his face black to ask a girl to prom.

Still, the students enjoy this last dance of their childhood. Imagine the night is warm and clear, the atmosphere elegant and romantic, during a prom, the students are happy and excited, tearing up the dance floor, loudly celebrating each other and the start of their adult lives.

  46. According to the passage, prom is_・

  A. a formal dance held by students to celebrate their birthday

  B. a formal dance held by high school to celebrate graduation

  C. a formal party held by young adults to celebrate their marriage

  D. a formal party held by parents to celebrate their children's growth

  47. It can be inferred from the passage that_.

  A. prom is a tradition in many parts of the world

  B. every family spends a lot of money on prom

  C. most students prefer to go to prom by themselves

  D. sometimes it's difficult to ask someone to prom

  48. The underlined word "elaborate" in Paragraph 4 means_・

  A. carefully prepared B. beautifully designed

  C. offensively proposed D. impressively organized

  B

Exercise is good for us. It reduces the risks of dying from all causes, including cancer and heart disease. This is according to the World Health Organization.

But many people who work all week have little time for exercise. So, they might try to do something to increase their heart rates over the weekend---go for a long run, take a bike ride, hike in the mountains or do a strenuous chore around the house, such as raking leaves, shoveling snow or digging a garden. We sometimes call people who exercise only on Saturdays and Sundays "weekend warriors." But is it healthy to avoid exercise during the work-week and then try to fit it all in during the weekend?

A new study suggests that, yes, it is healthy: even weekend warriors may reduce their risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Australian researchers at the University of Sydney conducted the study. It took place over a nine-year period. During that time, the researchers looked at the self-reported exercise habits and health examinations of more than 63,000 adults in England and Scotland. Then they connected that information to mortality records. The researchers found that people who exercised only one or two days a week improved their chances of living longer than people who did not exercise at all. Even those who are very overweight could extend their lives by exercising a couple of days per week. Exercises included playing sports and taking a brisk walk.

First, let's look at cancer. When compared to those who did not exercise at all, weekend warriors had an 18 percent lower risk of dying from cancer. As for cardiovascular disease, weekend warriors had a 40 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease than inactive people, or so-called "couch potatoes". Couch potatoes are people who don't exercise. They simply sit all day like potatoes.

Emmanuel Stamatakis is the senior author of the study. He says that he found it "very encouraging" that even people who exercised as little as one or two times a week appear to lower their risk of early death. In other words, their health improves even if they don't meet the suggested weekly amount of physical activity. However, to be in the best health, Stamatakis says, more exercise is better. The WHO suggests that the average adult get at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense activity per week. For the best results, the organization suggests 75 minutes per week of vigorous physical activity. However, if you are busy with work and family duties, exercise as much as you can. Research seems to show that even a little is definitely better than none at all.

  49. Many people exercise only on weekends because____.

  A. they have much work to do at home

  B. they are trying to increase their heart rate

  C. they think it healthy to exercise on weekends

  D. they have little time for exercise during the week

  50. To keep healthy, the best way is to_.____.

  A. exercise a couple of days per week

  B. hike in the mountain on weekends

  C. sit on the sofa all day like a" couch potato"

  D. exercise 75 minutes energetically per week

51.What is the purpose of the passage?

  A. To inform us of the findings of a new study.

  B. To advise us to exercise to avoid diseases.

  C. To warn us of the risk of many diseases.

  D. To educate us on ways of keeping healthy.

Yesterday was extremely bright and calm, and I traveled to Wuthering Heights bearing a note for Cathy from Mrs. Dean. When I arrived, Hareton Earnshaw was lingering in the garden, and he looked like a gentleman but acted as an uneducated man. He informed me that Heathcliff was out but would return in an hour, so I went inside to await his return. Hareton came in with me, and we found Cathy preparing some vegetables for that evening's dinner. She ignored me, and I thought she was exceptionally beautiful, but unfriendly.

Hareton asked her to move her things to the kitchen.

She growled, 'Move them yourself!" She then distanced herself by going to sit by the window.

I pretended to look at the garden through the window so I could drop the note into her lap. She threw it onto the floor and demanded to know what it was.

I answered, 'A letter from Mrs. Dean."

Hareton immediately seized it and said Heathcliff should see it first, but he threw the letter on the floor near Cathy when she began to cry. She picked it up and read it eagerly and then asked me about Thrushcross Grange and sighed,'' 1 wish I could be there!"she said wistfully as she leaned her pretty head against the window. "I'm tired and bored, Hareton!"

I asked her to write a reply for Mrs Dean, and she claimed she would like to but could not because she had nothing to write with nor a piece of paper to write on.

She complained, "I don't even have a book from which I could tear a page!"

I was shocked! "How can you live here without books?"

She said, "I was always reading books when I had them in my possession, but Heatheliff does not read, so he destroyed them. Joseph has some books on religion, and I know that Hareton has a secret collection of my books in his room. He can't read them, so he won't let me read them, either."

Hareton was embarrassed, and he blushed. 1 said, "Hareton wants to learn and be like you. Perhaps in a few years, he will be a clever student."

She replied, "And meanwhile, he wants me to become stupid! Sometimes I can hear him trying to read, and it is incredibly funny because he makes so many mistakes and then he swears!" she laughed.

Earnshaw was upset now because he was laughed at for being stupid and then laughed at again for trying to improve himself. I agreed with him and feIt he was treated unfairly'.

I said, "We all had to start the learning process somewhere, and if our teachers laughed at us instead of helping us, we would still be making mistakes."

She said,' 'l don't want to stop his learning. hut I do think lie should not take what is mine and make it sound ridiculous."

Hareton went upstairs and came down with some books and threw them on Cathy's lap. "'rake them," he shouted."I don't' want them any more; in fact, I never want to see them again!'

" I don't want them, either!" she said. “They will make me think of you, and I will hate them !"

She took one of the books and began to imitate Hareton by reading it in the poor way that she heard him read it. She laughed, and Hareton reacted violently and hit her. He picked up the books and destroyed them by throwing them in the fire, although I could see on his face that it hurt him to do it. He was very angry and went outside just as Heathciiff was entering. Heathcliff's entry did not stop Hareton's departure, and they passed each other without speaking. When Cathy saw Heathcliff coming, she left the room, so I was alone when Heathcliff entered.

I told him that I intended to leave Thrushcross Grange and offered to pay my lease in full Heathciiff accepted this offer and invited me to join his household for dinner. It was a terribly dreary meal because Cathy was instructed to eat in the kitchen, and Heatheliff and Hareton were both completely silent. As I left, I thought how different life would be for Cathy if I befriended her and took her to London!

  52. Yesterday "I" travelled to Wuthering Heights mainly to______.

  A. send Cathy a note B. have a dinner

  C. visit Heathcliff D. teach Hareton to read

53.What did 'I' think of the way Cathy treated Hareton?

  A. He deserved it for being rude. B. She was being unfair.

  C. She misunderstood him. D. She was jealous of him.

  54. Hareton burnt the books because_____.

  A. Cathy teased him for being stupid B. he felt frustrated with trying to read

  C. he was ashamed of being uneducated D. those books used to belong to Cathy

55.What do "I" imply by saying "how different life would be for Cathy if I befriended her and took her to London!"

  A. Cathy would have many books to read in London.

  B. Cathy would have many friends in London.

  C. Cathy was not respected here in Wuthering Heights.

  D. Cathy acted unfriendly here in Wuthering Heights.

  Men don't cry. Why?

One of our most firmly deep-rooted beliefs of masculinity(男子气概)is that a real man doesn't cry in public. Sobbing openly is for girls. So it's perhaps surprising to learn that the gender gap in crying seems to be a recent development. Historically, men routinely wept, and no one saw it as feminine(女性的)or shameful.

For example, in the Middle Ages, we find one ambassador repeatedly bursting into tears when addressing speeches. In medieval romances, knights cried purely because they missed their girlfriends. There's no mention of the men in these stories trying to hide their tears. No one pretends to have something in his eyes. No one makes an excuse to leave the room. Nor do their companions make fun of this public crying. it's universally regarded as an admirable expression of feeling.

So where did all the male tears go? There was no anti-crying movement. No leaders of church or state introduced measures to discourage them. The most obvious possibility is that this shift(转变)is the result of changes that took place as we moved from a feudal agricultural society to one that was urban and industrial. In the Middle Ages. most people spent their lives in villages. typically around 250 to 300 people. who they had known since birth. If men cried, they did SO with people who would sympathize. But from the 18th to 20th century, the population became increasingly urbanized and people were living in the middle of thousands of strangers . Furthermore, changes in the economy required men to work together in factories and offices where emotional expression and even private conversation were discouraged by hard-charging bosses in order to increase productivity.

Yet human beings weren't designed to swallow their emotions. and there's reason to believe that holding back tears can be dangerous to your well-being. Research from the 1980s has suggested a relationship between stress-related illnesses and inadequate crying. So it's time to open the floodgates. Time for men to give up following the stone-faced heroes of action movies and be more like the weeping statesmen, and knights of thousands of years of human history. When misfortune strikes, let us all-men and women--join together and cry until our sleeves are thoroughly wet. As the Old Testament has it:" They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

A research team at Oregon Health & Science University successfully fixed a disease-c arrying gene in human embryos. It was the first time this has been done. This small effort could be a big step in preventing gene-related diseases.

The team injected sperm from a man who carries the heart-damaging gene into eggs, and at the same time injected a gene-editing tool called CRISPR-Cas-9, which acts like scissors- cutting out the defective DNA. (81)▲. The embryos then fixed the DNA themselves, replacing the damaged part, without more help from the scientists.

Dr. George Daley, dean of Harvard Medical School, says, this technology should not be used for enhancing, or improving human capabilities. That is what sonic call 'designer babies"-parents creating features they want in babies.

  (83) ▲, Daley says there should be independent supervision by professional groups to observe this work. But based on just this one study, he says it is far too early to use it in any way for making babies.
