Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Some heroes, like Lucca, are not even human. Lucca is a 12-year-old dog. On April5, the German shepherd(德国牧羊犬) received an award for her brave military(军事的)service, during which she lost one of her legs.

Lucca was in London to receive the Dickin Medal from a British organization, which provides free medical care to the sick and injured pets of people in need and promotes responsible pet ownership. Lucca is the first U. S. military dog to receive the medal. She and her owner traveled to London for the award ceremony. "Lucca is very intelligent, loyal, and had an amazing drive for her work," her owner said. "She is the only reason I made it home to my family and I am fortunate to have served with her."

During her six years of active military service, Lucca completed more than 400 missions. She was trained to find hidden weapons and explosive devices. Lucca's skills protected the lives of thousands of soldiers, and she was so effective on duty that no human soldiers were killed during any of her patrols(巡查).

But Lucca did not escape injury. On March 23, 2012, she was on patrol when a device exploded beneath her. Lucca instantly lost her front left leg. She also suffered serious burns on her body, and an operation was done on her so as to save her life. Her owner had remained at Lucca's side throughout her operation and her recovery, for she had saved his life on so many occasions. Within 10 days, Lucca was walking again.

Lucca is now retired and lives in California with her owner's family. The owner said that he would do his best to keep her spoiled in her well-deserved retirement.

OK, confession(忏悔) time! I have never been particularly sporty. Maybe it was because my PE classes at school consisted mainly of running round a freezing race track in the driving wind and rain once a week for 45 minutes. I grew up with no television so I never developed much of an interest in watching sports either much to some of my friends' horror.

I remember that as a small child in nursery or primary school, playing sports was fun, not something I had to do, but something I wanted to do, something I enjoyed. Moving on to high school marked a big change in this respect. Sport became not something I enjoyed, but something I had to do to stay healthy and pass my PE class. The fun element had been taken away from it.

Over the last few years I have tried a few different sports. I have tried running, cycling, and swimming but it all felt a lot of the time like a bit of a chore. I wasn't really enjoying it. It wasn't fun and so I found it very difficult to motivate(激励) myself.

This winter time I decided I would try something new to avoid having to go out jogging in the cold weather. And I met across yoga(瑜伽). And I love it! It has completely changed how I look at sport. Yoga is not about competing or being the best. It is not about how you look. It is all about how you feel-reconnecting with your own body and rediscovering the fun in movement. I find it grounds me and calms me on some days whereas on others it fills me up with energy.

If you want to try something new, I would highly recommend trying out yoga. Yoga has helped me change my attitude towards sport. Maybe it could help you too!

  28. When did the author lose interest in sports?

  A. In nursery school.

  B. In primary school.

  C. In high school.

  D. At college.

  29. Why wasn't the author interested in sports?

  A. Because none of his friends liked sports.

  B. Because he thought playing sports was dull.

  C. Because playing sports couldn't help him stay healthy.

  D. Because he thought it was difficult to pass his PE class.

  30. Which of the following about yoga is TRUE?

  A. It is about competing.

  B. It is about being the best.

  C. It is about how you look.

  D. It is about how you feel.

  31. What is the best title of the text?

  A. Finding Fun in Yoga

  B. My Opinions on Yoga

  C. Do Sports Now

  D. Trying Something New

  D

Can you train yourself to get by on less sleep? Margaret Thatcher did it. So did Salvador Dali. They survived the day with only a few hours of sleep. The question is whether you can force yourself to do the same.

There is a quite a range in the number of hours we like to sleep. As Jim Horne writes in Sleepfaring, 80% of us manage between six and nine hours a night: the other 20% sleep more or less than this. But how easy is it to change your regular schedule? If you force yourself to get out of bed a couple of hours early every day will your body eventually become accustomed to it? Sadly not.

There is plenty of evidence that a lack of sleep has a bad effect. We do not simply adjust to it. In the short-term it reduces our concentration, and if it's extreme it makes us confused and distressed, and turns us into such poor drivers that it's the equivalent(相等物) of being drunk. The long-term effects are even more worrying. Repeatedly getting less sleep than you need over the course of decades is associated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.

But what about those people who do happily appear to manage on fewer hours than the rest of us? Why does it not seem to make them ill?

Firstly, you need to know the fact that there are plenty of myths about people's bold claims. Napoleon is believed to say that sleep was only for weak people, but in fact he got plenty of shut-eye.

You might be disappointed to find you need more sleep than you'd hoped, but don't see it as a waste. This is time spent valuably allowing your body and mind to function at their best during waking hours. It may use up a third of your life, but it makes the other two thirds so much better.

  32. Margaret Thatcher and Salvador Dali are mentioned in the text to show that_______.

  A. some famous people get short sleep

  B. some famous people don't like sleeping

  C. sleeping takes up a big part of our lives

  D. sleeping plays an important role in our lives

  33. What's the main idea of the third paragraph?

  A. How long we should sleep.

  B. The effect of enough sleep.

  C. The harm of lacking sleep.

  D. Why we should sleep long.

  34. What does the underlined word "shut-eye" refer to?

  A. Weakness.

  B. Tiredness.

  C. Death.

  D. Sleep.

  35. What's the writer's attitude towards getting enough sleep?

  A. It's easy.

  B. It's worthwhile.

  C. It's difficult.

  D. It's unnecessary.
