The Navajo Indians are the largest federally recognized Native American Indian race in the United States. Their reservation is spread out through out the four comers of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado.
The Navajo Indians were unique among Native Americans, not only because of the strength and determination of their union but also because of the role played by the older women in power of each village. These women chose its chief and could either start wars by calling for the catching of prisoners to replace dead relatives or stop them by refusing to supply soldiers with necessary food.
Before the arrival of Europeans, the Navajo Indians started wars mainly to acquire captives (俘虏) to restore their population. Contact with foreign traders brought destroying disease as early as 1633 and thus made the need for captives stronger. At the same time, the Europeans’ coming created an economic eagerness for war: the desire to control the fur trade and gain access to European goods without any prevention. The war with the Hurons in the 1640s was but the first of all kinds of conflicts with other races known as the Beaver Wars,in which the Navajo Indians fought desperately to keep a leading position in the trade. In the mid-1670s,just when they were achieving their goal, the French stepped in;an Navajo victory would have destroyed France’s plans to trade directly with the Indians of the Great Lakes and Mississippi valley. Over the next twenty years the French made repeated attacks on Navajo villages. The English offered little help other than weapons to their trading partners and impractical union. Their people and resources were reduced by constant wars. The Navajo Indians in 1701 signed an agreement with France,England, and their Indian neighbors. For the next half-century they kept their power through trade and skilled diplomacy (外交)rather than wars.
28. What can we conclude about the older Navajo women?
A. They were the leaders of their groups. B. They did not engage in war at all.
C. They had important political influence. D. They held much economic power.
29. Whom did the Navajo Indians fight against according to the passage?
A. Other Indian races and the French. B. The English army only.
C. Other Indian races only. D. The French,English, and other Indian races.-
30. What did the Navajo Indians fight for?
A. Controlling the fur trade. B. Proving their strength and courage.
C. Acquiring more land. D. Driving the Europeans away.
31. Why did the Navajo Indians remain powerful after 1701 ?
A. Because they had skills at war. B. Because they had diplomatic skills.
C. Because they had more land and trade. D. Because they had political unions.

PASADENA,Calif. —Scientists using data from NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) have discovered the coldest class of star-like bodies, with temperatures as cool as the human body.
Astronomers hunted these dark globes, named Y dwarfs, for more than a decade without success. When viewed with a visible-light telescope, they are nearly impossible to see. WISE5s infrared vision(红外线视觉)allowed the telescope to finally spot the weak ray of six Y dwarfs relatively close to our sun, within a distance of about 40 light-years.
“ WISE scanned the entire sky for these and other objects, and was able to spot their extremely weak light with its highly sensitive infrared vision,”said Jon Morse,Astrophysics Division director at NASA Center in Washington. “ They are 5,000 times brighter at the longer infrared waves WISE observed from space than those observable from the ground. ”
The Y,s are the coldest members of the brown dwarf family. Brown dwarfs are sometimes referred to as “failed” stars. They are too low in mass to combine atoms at their cores()and thus don’t bum with the fires that keep stars like our sun shining steadily for billions of years. Instead, these objects cool and fade with time, until what little light they do emit is at infrared waves.
Astronomers study brown dwarfs to better understand how stars form, and to understand the atmospheres of planets beyond our solar system. The atmospheres of brown dwarfs are similar to those of gas-giant planets like Jupiter(木星),but they are easier to observe because they are alone in space, away from the blinding light of a parent star.
So far, WISE data have shown 100 new brown dwarfs. More discoveries are expected as scientists continue to examine the vast quantity of data from WISE. The telescope performed the most advanced survey of the sky at infrared waves to date, from Jan. 2017 to Feb. 2018, scanning the entire sky about 1.5 times.
32. What’s the temperature of the coldest class of star-like bodies?
A.37. B.50. C.100. D.1000.
33. What can we know from the second paragraph?
A. Y dwarfs discovered are relatively close to our sun.
B. Y dwarfs can be spotted clearly by a visible-light telescope.
C. The distance between Y dwarfs and the earth is 40 light-years.
D. Eight Y dwarfs have been spotted with an infrared telescope.
34. What does the underlined word “emit” probably mean?
A. Breathe. B. Deliver. C. Give off. D. Send away.
35. Why will brown dwarfs cool and fade with time?
A. Because they can’t burn all the time like our sun.
B. Because they are sometimes called “failed” stars.
C. Because brown dwarfs are the cool class of star-like bodies.
D. Because they are too low in mass to combine at their cores.
