  B

Kyle is my big brother. For eighteen years, I felt that Kyle was my enemy. In fact, I found it ridiculous that people thought older brothers looked out for their sisters, protected them and fought off their sisters’ bullies (恃强凌弱者). Huh? My brother was the bully.

When we were little, his fights with others caused my black eye, cuts in my lips and even a nosebleed or two. I often wished I were an only child!

Time flew. We ended up attending colleges two thousand miles apart, yet, strangely, that’s when we began communicating. Through e-mail, we kept in constant touch. Mostly I complained about serious homesickness, impossible roommates, difficult classes, and… dating. I felt I lost myself. At a particularly low time, I cried to Kyle about my injured confidence, my broken heart, and the particular jerk (蠢人) who broke it.

And that’s when the package arrived.

“What’s this?” I thought as I tore into it. The box revealed a sweatshirt. “Phi Delta Theta? That’s Kyle’s frat (兄弟会).” Kyle was the president of the frat house. Why would he send this? I put it aside and dug deeper. A pile of letters. And they were all addressed to me. I opened the one on top.

“Katrina,” it said, “your brother showed me your picture and I think you’re awesome and beautiful.” I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, sure.” I opened another letter. And another. Eighteen in all.

Each one was from a different guy. They complimented (恭维) me. They invited me on dates. And they tried to convince me to make a trip out to Knox College and meet them.

I loved it. I didn’t care about the motive. And mostly, I loved the idea that ray big brother had pulled it off. I picked up the phone.

“Kyle, the box came and I can’t believe what you did.” But Kyle wasn’t accepting compliments. “Oh,” he said, “I was just tired of reading your oversensitive e-mails.”

Big brothers, I decided, really did protect their sisters. And mine fought off the biggest bully I’d ever met. Now I return to my true self, full of confidence.

  24. Why did the author use to call Kyle her enemy?

  A. He had many fights with her.

  B. He couldn’t fight off her bullies.

  C. He looked after and protected her.

  D. His fights caused her to suffer a lot.

  25. Why did the frat guys write to the author?

  A. They had mercy on her.

  B. They tried to cheer her up.

  C. They couldn’t help dating her.

  D. They were crazy about her beauty.

  26. What does the underlined words in the last paragraph refer to?

  A. Her self-doubt. B. Her homesickness.

  C. The particular jerk. D. The challenging classes.

  27. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

  A. To share her childhood experience.

  B. To complain about her biggest bully.

  C. To show her brother’s protection for her.

  D. To introduce her adjustment to college life.

Here’s an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn’t require an actual shot.

For the first time, researchers have tested a fluvaccine patch (疫苗贴) in a human clinical trial and found that it delivered as much protection as a traditional injection with a needle. Doctors and public health experts have highhopes that it will increase the number of people who get immunized (免疫的) against the flu.

Seasonal flu is responsible for up to half a million deaths around the world each year according to the World Health Organization. A team led by Georgia Tech engineer Mark Prausnitz has come up with an alternative method that uses “microneedles”. These tiny needles are so small that 100 of them, arranged in order on a patch, can fit under your thumb (拇指). Yet they’re big enough to hold vaccine for three types of flu.

None of the study volunteers had serious side effects. The groups that got patches had mild skin reactions that were not seen in the regular needle group, while the volunteers in the regular needle group were more likely to experience pain. Overall, 70 percent of the volunteers who got vaccine patches said they’d rather use them again than get a traditional flu shot. The study authors declared it a success on all fronts.

The biggest beneficiaries could be peoplein low- and middle-income countries, where flu vaccines are hard to come by. Reducing pain is nice, but other benefits—the patch costs less, is easier to transport, doesn’t require refrigeration, can be self-administered and doesn’t cause waste of needles—are even better.

“Microneedle Patches have the potential to become ideal candidates for vaccination programs,” wrote Katja Hoschler and Maria Zambon of Public Health England.

  28. What is the passage mainly about?

  A. A vaccine that cures people of their flu.

  B. A team that does research on seasonal flu.

  C. A patch that makes flu shots a thing of the past.

  D. A method that makes traditional flu shot painless.

  29. What do we know about the vaccine patch?

  A. It causes slight side effects.

  B. It causes serious skin reactions.

  C. It delivers vaccine on the head.

  D. It works badly on 30% of the volunteers.

  30. The new patch has all the following benefits except that .

  A. it is provided free of charge

  B. it can be used without doctors

  C. it can be kept at room temperature

  D. it needs less care in transportation

  31. What is Katja and Maria’s attitude towards the new shot?

  A. Cautious. B. Favorable. C. Ambiguous. D. Disapproving.

The Nazca Lines are a series of large ancient geoglyphs (几何图案) in the Nazca Desert, in southern Peru. It is ranging from geometric patterns to drawings of different animals and stylized human-like forms. The ancient lines can only be truly taken in from high in the air, leaving generations puzzled as to how these precise works could have been completed long before the documented invention of human flight.

The Lines were first spotted when commercial airlines began flying across the Peruvian desert in the 1920’s. Who built them and what was their purpose? Are they roads, star pointers, maybe even a gigantic map? If the people who lived here 2,000 years ago had only a simple technology, how did they manage to construct such precise figures? Did they have a plan? These markings are like a vast puzzle.

The Nazca Lines are the most outstanding group of geoglyphs in the world. There are also huge geoglyphs in Egypt, Malta, United States (Mississippi and California), Chile, Bolivia and in other countries. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity as they were made and remade throughout a certain history period, form the most impressive archeological (考古学的) group.

The Nazca plain is unique for its ability to preserve the markings upon it, due to the combination of the climate (one of the driest on Earth, with only twenty minutes of rainfall per year) and the flat, stony ground which minimizes the effect of the wind at ground level. With no dust or sand to cover the plain and little rain or wind to erode (腐蚀) it, lines drawn here tend to stay drawn. These factors, combined with the existence of lighter-colored subsoil beneath the desert surface, provide a vast writing pad that is suited to the artist who wants to leave his mark eternal.

  32. What do you know about the Nazca Lines?

  A. They were built as a big map.

  B. They were formed by nature.

  C. They are ancient lines in caves.

  D. They are huge markings in a desert.

  33. How many factors make the Nazca Lines the most impressive?

  A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.

  34. Why are the Nazca Lines well preserved?

  A. Because of their great artistic value.

  B. Because of the existence of soft soil.

  C. Because of the climate and geography.

  D. Because of the wind at ground level.

  35. What does the underlined word “eternal” probably mean?

  A. Non-stop. B. Ever-lasting. C. Real-life. D. High-end.

Some people find that when the temperature goes down, so do their spirits. 36 They eat more and gain weight. They have trouble sleeping. They can’t think clearly.
