I live just outside of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Several years ago, I bought a new house on the edge of a wooded area. I like to feed birds, so upon moving in, I put a feeder up in my backyard. But before the sun even set that evening, squirrels were swinging off the bird feeder and driving the birds away. I realized that I had to do something or the birds would soon be too scared to come near the feeder. I’m not a mean guy and wouldn't do anything to hurt the squirrels, so after my several peaceful attempts failed, I visited my local hardware store and bought a “squirrel-proof bird feeder”. The label said it was guaranteed, so I took it home and put it in my backyard.

But by sunset, squirrels were once again swinging off the bird feeder. Really upset, I took the feeder back to the hardware store, demanding a full refund.

“Calm down,” the manager told me. “I could’ve told you when you bought it that there’s no such thing as a squirrel-proof bird feeder.”

“You mean we can land a man on the moon but our brightest scientists can’t design and manufacture a bird feeder that can outsmart an animal with a brain the size of a pea?” I asked.

“Let me ask you something, sir,” the man replied. “How much time on average have you spent in the last two weeks trying o keep the squirrels out of your bird feeder?” I thought it over for a moment and responded, “Maybe ten to fifteen minutes a day.”

“And how much tine do you think the squirrels spend each day trying to get in?”

The answer, I learned, is almost every waking squirrel moment! In fact, they are unique in the animal kingdom in hat they prefer searching for food to fooling around.

  A. By giving a full refund. B. By quarrelling with him.

  C. By winning his approval. D. By showing sympathy.

  27. Which word can best describe the squirrels according to the manager?

  A. Troublesome. B. Greedy. C. Cautious. D. Focused.

Albert Einstein has recently been making headlines again. However, this time it is not for a new scientific breakthrough, but because of a handwritten note the scientist gave a bellboy 95 years ago.

Earlier this year, the bellboy’s nephew decided to finally part with the note and handed it to Jerusalem-based Winner’s Auctions and Exhibitions. Dubbed(被称为)the “theory of happiness”,the note was put up for auction(拍卖)on October 24, 2017, with a starting bid of $2,000. The auctioneers estimated that it would sell for a maximum of $8,000. Instead, it brought the owner an astonishing $1.56 million from a European buyer. Auction representative MeniChadad later said, “It was a record for an auction of a document in Israel, and it was just wow, wow, wow. I think the value can be explained by the fact that the story behind the tip is so uplifting and inspiring, and because Einstein continues to be a global rock star long after his death.”

In October 1922, Einstein was invited to Japan to deliver a series of lectures. As the scientist was making his way from Europe to Tokyo, he received a telegram(电报)informing him that he had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. Though pleased at the news, the Nobel Prize winner decided to continue with his Japanese trip instead of heading to Stockholm to accept the honor.

While in Tokyo, he penned the note in German on the letter paper of his hotel. The note said, “A quiet and humble(低调的)life will bring more happiness than the pursuit of success and the constant restlessness that comes with it.”

The narrative on why the scientist wrote the note varies. Some believe it was to express Einstein’s delight at the enthusiastic reception he received from his lecture attendees. Others think it was specially written for the bellboy who came to deliver a message, either because the scientist did not have lose change to tip him, or because the messenger refused to accept a monetary compensation. Regardless of the reason, Einstein told the bellboy, “Maybe if you are lucky, the note will become much more valuable than just a regular tip.” He was right!

  28. What did MeniChadad mean by his comment?

  A. The bellboy was lucky. B. The outcome was reasonable.

  C. Einstein was a global rock star. D. The auction was well-arranged.

  29. What did Einstein do just after knowing he had won the Prize?

  A. He continued going to Tokyo.

  B. He headed to accept the honor.

  C. He sent a telegram to Stockholm.

  D. He expressed his pleasure in his lecture.

  30. Einstein wrote the note ______.

  A. in Tokyo, Japan B. in a German hotel

  C. for his lecture D. at he bellboy’s request

  31. What can be the best title for the text?

  A. Einstein’s Travel to Tokyo

  B. Einstein’s Friendship with a Bellboy

  C. Einstein’s New Scientific Breakthrough

  D. Einstein’s Note Auction for $1.56 Million

Asking a patient to hum(哼)piano tunes and play an instrument while taking brain surgery may sound like a strange

request from a doctor. However, that is what a team of brain specialists, led by University of Rochester Medical Center’s Web Pilcher, requested Dan Fabbio to do as they were removing his tumor(肿瘤).

The chain of events that led to this groundbreaking medical operation began in 2017, when the then 25-year-old professional musician was diagnosed with a low-grade brain tumor. Though the swelling was benign(良性的), it was located in the part of the brain known to be active when people listen to and make music. “Removing a tumor from the brain can have significant consequences depending upon its location,” Pilcher says. “Both the tumor itself and the operation to remove it can damage tissue and affect communication between different parts of the brain.”

To prevent that from happening, Pilcher and his colleague Brad Mahon, designed numerous tests, including asking Fabbio to listen to piano tunes and hum them back during MRI(核磁共振) scans. This enabled the physicians to locate the exact region that is vital for music and language processing and create a three-dimensional map of Fabbio’s brain.

Though that was a great starting point, it was not a secure way to avoid impacting the area responsible for the young man’s musical talent. The only way to do that was to keep the patient awake and ask him to hum piano tunes during the surgery so that the surgeons could identify the areas to avoid. While Fabbio was repeating the tunes being played to him, Elizabeth Marvin, a music professor, scored each cognitive(认知的)test in real – time.

While the surgery went without incident, the real test came when Fabbio was asked to play a song on his saxophone(萨克斯). “He played the precisely – adjusted tune perfectly, and when he finished, the entire operating room erupted in applause,” said Marvin. “It made you want to cry.”

  32. Why did Fabbio’s tumor need to be removed according to paragraph 2?

  A. It had hardly ever been found in humans.

  B. It could affect the way the brain works.

  C. It spread too rapidly.

  D. It put his life at risk.

  33. What does the underlined phrase “a great starting point” in paragraph 4 refer to?

  A. Listening to piano tunes.

  B. Designing the numerous tests.

  C. Locating the part responsible for music.

  D. Avoiding impacting the patient’s musical talent.

  34. What was Fabbio instructed to do in the operation?

  A. Hum piano tunes. B. Develop music talent.

  C. Map his brain activity. D. Play a song on his saxophone.

  35. What does Marvin’s work in the operation include?

  A. Celebrating the success of the operation.

  B. Assessing Fabbio’s brain performance.

  C. Teaching Fabbio piano tunes.

  D. Scoring the surgeons’ work.
