The role of newspaper has seen many changes over the years. The small town newspaper carried not only local news like before but state and national news, and even news from wars and overseas countries. It was the link to national events.
The type of coverage in newspapers has changed through the years. Today we are often asked if newspapers could someday be replaced by a paperless, computerized information device. In my mind I do not fed that a website will ever replace the actual paper edition we hold in our hands.
It is true that we often use the Internet to gather information. We may visit news websites and read about events, check the weather conditions or even get different views on sports articles. However, there are certain aspects about newspapers that still appeal to people. They enjoy the unique feature stories, local photographs, and items of historical record. Newspapers are portable, and easy to read, when you want to read them.
If we look back on history, we find that when the radio was invented, it joined newspapers as a new source of information, but did not replace them. Television didn’t eliminate the radio or newspapers. Websites will be a place for a quick look at news but not a way of sitting in your chair and holding the news in your hands.
As we take each new step into the world of technology, we need to remember that our local newspaper is the easiest and best source for getting the news, placing an ad and informing the public. It is the best way to find out about church suppers, newborn babies, school concerts, the unique hobby of your neighbor and the specials at local business.
I am convinced that newspapers serve an important role in our community and that they will continue to coexist with all forms of information technology.
24. The town newspaper used to deal with .
A. news about the local people
B. news about the whole world
C. news about all the country

B. They are portable and easy to read
C. They can place ads and inform the public.
D. They can attract people of different ages.
26. What does the underlined word “eliminate” mean?
A. affect B. stress C. maintain D. remove
27. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Internet and the Newspaper B. The Future of the Newspaper
C. The TV and the Newspaper D. The Benefits of the Newspaper

September is National Childhood Obesity Month, a major topic for the US Department of Agricultural (USDA). The agency’s program Healthier US School Challenge: Smarter Lunchrooms (HUSSC: SL) fights against childhood obesity by helping more students across the country get healthy food.
“Unfortunately, many students don’t get enough healthy food, especially those from low-income families. Without enough healthy food, kids will develop health problems, such as diabetes (糖尿病) or heart-related diseases,” the Secretary of Agricultural Tom Vilsack says. “These conditions can make kids less productive at school and increase health care costs for their parents.”
Millions of children in the US depend on meals provided by their schools. In 2012, more than 31 million children ate school lunches, and 12.5 million ate school breakfasts. HUSSC: SL decides to make the most of school mea: It recognizes schools that have joined Team Nutrition, a USDA program that helps schools provide healthy meals and health education.
There are four levels of Team Nutrition recognition: bronze, silver, gold, and gold distinction award. For each level, schools must complete the Smarter Lunchrooms Scorecard. The program provides a checklist, which asks schools to consider everything from low-fat milk to their lunch menus. To meet the need of bronze, schools must offer at least 30 items on the checklist. Silver or gold schools must offer 50 items, while the highest level, gold distinction award, must offer 70. Schools that achieve each standard are added to a list of winners on Team Nutrition’s website.
Vilsack says that in 2009, only 100 schools earned Team Nutrition recognition. Since then, many schools have made changes in their menus and education programs. Now more than 6,000 schools nationwide have earned recognition. And the USDA is not alone in this cause. First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative works together with HUSSC: SL to spread the message.

It was once the cornerstone of polite communication—but is seems that among today’s children, letter writing is a dying art.
More than a quarter of 7-to 14-year-olds have not written a letter in the past year, and one in ten has never written one, according to a new survey. But the study by World Vision to mark its National Letter Writing Day found that in the previous week, half of youngsters had written an e-mail or posted a quick message on a social networking site.
‘‘Handwritten letters are much more personal than electronic communication,” said the child education expert Sue Palmer, author of Toxic Childhood. “If children do not write or receive letters, they will miss out on key developmental benefits.”
“By going to the trouble to commit words to paper, the writer shows their investment of time and effort in a relationship. That’s why we tend to hang on to personal letters as keepsakes (纪念品). The effort of writing is a very real one for a child. Painstakingly manoeuvring the pencil across the page, thinking of the best words to convey a message, struggling with spelling and punctuation, it’s an effort worth making, because it’s only through practice that we become truly literate(能读会写的)---and literacy is the hallmark of human civilization.”
BBC broadcaster and former head teacher, Roy Noble, said that while he can understand that this generation of children use texts and e-mails to communicate, he believes you can’t beat an old-fashioned letter for that personal touch.
“It’s easy to see why children are getting out of the habit of writing letters, but there is a certain charm that comes with a letter arriving through the post among the usual brown envelops,” he said. “I think it is important for children to know how to write a letter, with the correct terms for personal and professional occasions.”
32. What does the study by World Vision show?
A. National Letter Writing Day is coming.
B. More children take up writing letters.
C. Letter writing is popular with youngsters.
D. The art of letter writing is fading away.
33. According to Sue Palmer, .
A. personal letters can be kept as keepsakes
B. letter writing is important for children’s development
C. electronic communication is more personal
D. literacy plays no role in a relationship
34. What does the underlined word ‘‘manoeuvring” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. holding B. carving C. moving D. breaking
35. What’s the attitude of Roy Noble towards electronic communication?
A. Understanding B. Skeptical C. Negative D. Pessimistic.

Getting Older
No one really knows how and why people change as they get older. Also, no theory sufficiently explains all the changes of the aging process. Aging is a complex process that varies in how it affects different people and organs. 36
At a certain point in our lives our body systems will begin to weaken. 37 It may become more difficult for us to see and hear. The slow change of aging causes our bodies to lose some of their ability to bounce back from disease and injury. In order to live longer, we have always tried to slow or stop this change that leads us toward the end of our lives.
38 A good diet plays an important role. The amount and the type of exercise we get are another two factors. 39 But scientists studying the aging problem want to know: Why do people grow old? They hope that by studying the aging medical science they may be able to make the length of life longer.
40 Many consider the later part of life to be the best time for living. Physical activity may become less, but often we get better understanding of the world and ourselves.
What we consider the old age now may only be middle-aged some day soon. Who knows, with so many advances in medical science happening so quickly, life length may one day be measured in centuries, rather than in years!
A. Our living condition is yet another.
B. Many factors decide our health.
C. Our strength may become weaker.
D. As for diet, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar.
E. There is nothing to be afraid of as the old age comes.
F. Symptoms include lack of energy, slow reactions, insomnia and poor memory.
G. In fact, even in one person, different organ systems “age” at a different rate.
